Matthew 7:24-25 annotated--Jesus' instructions for dealing with tough times

 Matthew 7:24-25

Jesus said to his disciples: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.

listens to= ἀκούω = akouō

to hear; "to hearken," with the idea of stillness, or attention;to attend to, consider what is or has been said;to understand, perceive the sense of what is said; to give ear to a teaching or a teacher; to comprehend, to understand; to follow with attentive hearing; to listen to, have regard to

acts on= ποιέω = poieō

to do, make; to produce, bear;used of the bringing forth of fruit; a continuous habit; execute; the carrying out of His Word; to keep; to perform; to observe; to work

built= οἰκοδομέω = oikodomeō

set solidly= θεμελιόω =themelioō

to lay a foundation; grounded; to make stable, establish 

These verbs combine to describe fully integrating Christ’s teaching into one’s life; making the effort to understand them, having the discipline to act on/execute them in particular circumstances, and doing that so regularly that living out Christ’s teachings becomes your habit/norm/default mode.

That sounds like the same dynamic Jesus was describing when He referred to eating His flesh and drinking His blood in John 6 and abiding in Him in John 15.
