John 14:1, 27 annotated (“Do not let your hearts be troubled...”)

Do not let your hearts be troubledBelieve in God, believe also in me.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.



hearts= καρδία =kardia
man's entire mental and moral activity, both the rational and the emotional elements.
the centre and seat of spiritual life
the soul or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavours
the understanding, the faculty and seat of the intelligence
the will and character
the soul as the seat of the sensibilities, affections, emotions, desires, appetites, passions

troubled= ταράσσω=tarassō
fear or perplexity
to agitate, trouble (a thing, by the movement of its parts to and fro)
to disquiet, make restless
to stir up
to strike one's spirit with fear and dread
to render anxious or distressed
to perplex the mind of one by suggesting scruples or doubts

Believe= πιστεύω= pisteuō
"to be persuaded of," and hence, "to place confidence in, to trust," signifies, in this sense of the word, reliance upon, not mere credence.
signifies "to entrust, commit to," Luk 16:11; 1Ti 1:11, "committed to (my) trust."
"to believe," also means "to entrust," and in the Active Voice is translated "to commit," in Luk 16:11; Jhn 2:24; in the Passive Voice, "to be intrusted with"
to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in
to credit, have confidence
to entrust a thing to one, i.e. his fidelity

Peace= ερήνη =eirēnē
harmonized relationships between God and man
rest and contentment
The corresponding Heb. word shalom primarily signifies "wholeness:"
the way that leads to peace
the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of whatsoever sort that is

afraid= δειλιάω = deiliaō
to be timid, fearful
